My Bangkok
Bangkok is my hometown, I've often thought
about moving out to the provinces, but when I weight the pro's
and con's of good country fresh air versus the hectic lifestyle
of the big city, my thoughts always wonder back to what I
would miss in the city. One of the first things that come
to mind is food, oh wonderful food, for dining, Bangkok is
certainly unbeatable, everything you want to eat from all
over the country and from every continent in the world is
available, and cheap too! Food is always on my mind, and my
wife can confirm that, even after dining I'll think about
what will the next meal be?
Every now and then, which is quite often,
I get the travel bug, usually it's for the hills of Khao Yai
National Park, but if the kids have their way it will be for
the beach in Cha Am. Bangkok being centrally located is within
an easy 2 hour drive to a choice of beach resorts, islands,
national parks, or a quaint country village with a relaxing
riverside setting where one can enjoy long cycling rides and
simply forget about the rest of the world.
As for shopping, well that is a another issue,
though I'm not a mad bargain hunter or a shopaholic, I will
only venture the malls and markets when the need arises or
when the wife forces me to! But with that said, I can't think
of any place on earth where one can satisfy every craving
and needs, whether it be software, hardware, DIY, hobby, or
whatever, Bangkok has it all. Also regular visitors to the
city will make it a point to visit clothing stores, whether
they be off the shelf or made to order, because fashion and
apparel in Bangkok is reasonably priced and in trend.
Bangkok's nightlife has something for everyone,
including the infamously notorious bars on Patpong, Nana and
Soi Cowboy, which I don't think anyone needs introducing to.
But there is more to Bangkok's night scene then the seedy
bars, Bangkokian's love to party, and party we do. Check out
RCA, Khaosan, Langsuan and Sukhumvit, other that there a couple
of hotels with very popular dance bars, eg. CM2, Spasso's
to name a few. As I mentioned earlier there is something for
everyone, which means Gays and Lesbians also have their places
for entertainment.

Travel Guide
Bangkok the Capital of Thailand is undoubtedly
the most exciting and interesting city to visit in all of
Asia. Though you may find that Bangkok has become a very modern
city in every sense of the word with high-rises, sky trains
and subway systems, but you will also find that many of the
fascinating ways of the original settlers are still in vogue
- adding to the charm of the city.
For example you will still find food vendors,
what we call Thai Fast Food, plying virtually every street
of the city serving up a quick and economical meal to office
workers, laborers and millionaires alike. (Normally a vendor
will serve only one particular dish (specialty), there to
enjoy a full meal of several dishes including desserts one
would be served by several vendors!). Water taxis and water
busses still ply the river and canals serving commuters from
suburban residential areas to the inner city, and for those
who simply want to get from A to B using the fastest mode
of transport, after the motorcycle taxi of course. Floating
markets is still a normal way of obtaining daily needs of
the people living along, or even on these waterways. So, as
you see, Bangkok may be a big city, but our Thai culture and
customs are still very evident everywhere you look.

Bangkok Weather
Forecast
Bangkok has good weather most days, though
it can be Hot, Hot, Hot, but nothing a Singha beer won't fix!
Coolest months are between November & February, March
it starts to get hot, with April & May the two hottest
months of the year. Expect rains from June to October, but
we also call this the Green Season as the rains makes everything
green again, between the rains you can find sunshines and
rainbows, so by all means do not hold off on travel during
this period.

Bangkok City Transport
Bangkok is relatively easy to get around
once you get the hang of the local transport links, in my
point of view the two main mode of transport for any tourist
is the Sky Train and the Chao Phraya Express Boats, the subway
is only useful for a couple of points such as. the Weekend
Market, Siam Niramit, and Hualumpong Railway Station. The
BMTA bus service is not entirely reliable, though it is cheap,
unless you have got alot of time on your hands you'll probably
better off on taking the Tuk Tuk's or Taxi's when needs be.

Events Calendar
One of the things that I like most about
living in the big city is that there is always something going
on, and I don't mean purely the entertainment events such
as Concerts and Shows, etc.. I'm talking about Trade Shows.
I love walking around the trade fairs on public days viewing
new products and trends, and there are enough shows to keep
you occupied throughout the year as the Bangkok Gems &
Jewelry Fair, Thailand International Furniture Fair, Bangkok
International Gift & Houseware Fair, Bangkok International
Fashion Fair, and the list goes on, just check the exhibition
calendar to find out if there is anything happening during
the time of your visit, you'll be sorry if you didn't!

Domestic & International Airlines
Bangkok has two airports, Suvarnabhumi International
Airport and Don Muang Airport, and 8 domestic flights connecting
the provinces to the far North, Northeast and South of Thailand.
With Bangkok being the regional hub for Southeast Asia, travelling
to and from the neighbouring countries of Cambodia, Laos,
Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam is quick and convenient.

Thailand Newspapers
Thailand has three
main English language newspapers, the Bangkok Post, The Nation
and Daily Xpress, the former tends to be a little neutural
when it comes to political issues, whilst the Nation stands
up and makes its views heard, this is also my favorite newspaper,
whilst the new kid on the block the Daily Xpress is a new
breed of newspaper in Thailand, it's a free publication and
can be found at sky train and subways stations. For news content
generally I would read both the Bangkok Post and The Nation
online as news can vary from one to the other, I like to analyze
it a bit!
